WHY MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

Building communities that know how to respond when someone is struggling.

Almost one in two adults will experience a mental health challenge in their lifetime, yet the people closest to them — colleagues, teachers, friends, leaders — rarely have the language or the confidence to respond well in the moment.

MHFA is evidence-based, internationally recognised training that teaches ordinary people to notice early signs, hold a difficult conversation with care, and connect someone with the right professional support.

  1. 01

    Intervene early

Recognise the warning signs of mental health problems in other adults.

Learn the skills to have an open, supportive conversation about mental health.

  3. 03

    Respond in a crisis

Respond across a range of crisis situations where an adult may be at risk of harm.

  4. 04

    Reduce stigma

Reduce stigma and increase support for adults experiencing and living with mental health problems.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Most people want to help. Very few feel equipped to.

Most of us will know a family member, friend, colleague or someone in our community who experiences a mental health problem at some point in their life. Yet knowing that someone is struggling and knowing what to say or how to help are two very different things.

Mental Health First Aid training gives everyday people practical, evidence-based skills to recognise signs that someone may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, approach them with greater confidence and guide them towards appropriate professional support.

Mental illness

Now affects every Australian, either directly or indirectly.

75 per cent

Of all mental health problems emerge before the age of 24.

In the workplace

A policy can't notice when someone isn't themselves. A colleague can.

Most organisations already have policies, EAPs and processes for managing psychosocial risk. These matter, but there can still be a long distance between support being available and a person feeling able to use it.

Mental Health First Aid training helps ordinary people across a workplace recognise when someone may be struggling, start a safe conversation, listen without judgement, and guide them toward appropriate professional support.

Mental Health First Aiders do not replace psychologists, EAPs, HR or clinical services. They help shorten the distance between someone beginning to struggle and receiving the right support.
