About The Human Impact Project

We are shaped by what came before us. We shape what comes next.

The Human Impact Project begins with a simple recognition: none of us moves through life without influencing the world around us.

We inherit conditions we did not create, and through the way we live, relate, respond and contribute, we become part of the conditions somebody else will inherit.

A QUICK STORY ABOUT PURPOSE

Sometimes the meaning of a life is only visible in what it makes possible.

3 billion years ago

Earth looked nothing like the world we know today. There were no forests, animals or humans, and almost no oxygen in the atmosphere, just huge amounts of carbon dioxide instead. The only organisms that could exist at that time were single-celled organisms called cyanobacteria.

Imagine for a moment that you were one of these little organisms two billion years ago. You might be born, you live a couple of weeks, you die, and you kind of feel like nothing really changed. The world I came to is exactly the same as the world that I left.

But what you wouldn't have understood is that every breath you took contributed to the possibility of countless lives after you. Lives you would never see. Lives we are all a part of today.

It's worth thinking that maybe the meaning of our lives is not even within the scope of our understanding.

THE POWER OF PRESENCE

Our lives are shaped by what came before us. We shape what comes next.

Where the project begins

Human beings are both shaped by and shaping the world around them.

Our contribution doesn't need to be heroic to matter. We just need to participate. And what we contribute becomes part of the conditions somebody else inherits.

What we inherit

Human beings enter a world already in motion.

  • 01Biology and family histories
  • 02Relationships and belief systems
  • 03Social norms, cultures and institutions
  • 04Physical environments that began taking shape long before we arrived

They influence what we learn about ourselves and each other. They affect what feels safe, familiar or threatening. They help shape the patterns through which we think, feel, behave and respond.

Our Philosophy

Response-ability.

The Human Impact Project is founded on the understanding that human beings are both shaped by and shaping the world around them. We inherit biological, relational, cultural and environmental conditions that influence our state, perceptions and patterns of behaviour. Yet we are not passive products of those conditions.

We are also capable of becoming aware of those influences and developing greater capacity to choose what happens next. Through self-awareness, emotional regulation, reflection and connection, automatic patterns can become visible. When they become visible, we have greater opportunity to respond with intention instead of simply repeating what is familiar.

Our ability to recognise what is happening within and around us, understand what is ours to influence, and take responsibility for the part we play in what follows.

Behaviour

Because no response ends with us. The way we behave becomes part of somebody else's experience — in homes, workplaces, schools and communities.

Human Impact is the work of understanding the human being beneath the behaviour, recognising the conditions that shape us, and becoming more conscious of the conditions we are creating in return.

A different question

It asks us to move beyond one question — and become curious enough to ask another.

That shift allows compassion and accountability to exist together. It gives us a way to understand behaviour without excusing its impact, and to take responsibility without reducing complex human problems to personal blame.

Become curious enough to ask

  • 01What is happening here?
  • 02What shaped this response?
  • 03What capacity is available right now?
  • 04And what could make a different response possible?

Everything enters a system somewhere and leaves an effect somewhere else.

Our Values

What guides our work.

Our values are the principles we return to when deciding how we teach, design, partner and contribute.

Our Vision

What happens within us does not stay within us.

Our Vision

A world with a deeper understanding of human behaviour — and a stronger capacity to respond to it wisely.

01 / 06

Where parents recognise that their own state becomes part of the emotional environment their children grow within.

This is a vision of people becoming more aware of their participation in the systems around them, and of institutions becoming more aware of the conditions they create for people.

Many of the challenges we experience collectively are built through ordinary human moments.

Stress carried from one interaction into another.A behaviour repeatedly rewarded until it becomes culture.A child learning what love feels like from the adults around them.A leader creating safety or fear through the way they respond under pressure.A family choosing to speak about what previous generations could not.

These moments can carry old patterns forward.

They can also change their direction.

The Human Impact Project works across individuals, workplaces, education and communities because these environments are connected. The same human being moves between them, carrying their state, experiences, relationships and learned ways of responding wherever they go.

If we want healthier systems, we need to understand the humans within them.

If we want humans to thrive, we also need to examine the systems within which they are being asked to live.

Our vision is for both to become more conscious of each other.

The Human Impact

More than two billion years ago, a microscopic organism could not have imagined you.

It could not have known that the oxygen released during its brief existence would become part of the conditions of existence itself.

Every day, through ordinary choices, conversations, reactions, relationships and acts of care — and decisions to lean into discomfort and heal what we have been handed — we add something to the conditions around us. Some effects will be immediate. Others may travel further than our lifetime allows us to see.

So perhaps the measure of a meaningful life is larger than what we personally achieve while we are here.

What conditions will exist because we were here?

That question sits behind everything we do at The Human Impact Project. Because the existing world shaped us. And now, for this brief part of the story, we are helping shape what comes next.

About the Founder

The heart & mind behind The Human Impact Project.

Jemaine's work has been shaped through generational pain, crises and pivotal choice points that preceded more than a decade of professional work spanning clinical practice, developmental and behaviour-based coaching, and supporting the wellbeing of frontline teams in safety-critical environments across WA's mining sector.

Now commencing a Master of Behaviour and Systemic Change, Jemaine's work holds the same enduring curiosity about the ripple effect of an individual's state of being and the impact it has on their life and the lives of those around them.
